Fishing
the Florida Keys varies from season to season. During winter
and early spring we primarily fish for sailfish and mackerel
using live baits such as ballyhoo and cigar minnows. Sailfish
are the main attraction during this time, with powerful runs
and gravity defying leaps. Multiple hookups are not uncommon
with this schooling billfish. Being a game fish, we now use
circle hooks that allow us to release the sailfish so it can
live to fight another day.
From
mid spring to early autumn we primarily fish for dolphin (also
known as Mahi Mahi and Dorado). Once located we sight cast
live and dead bait to these frenzied feeders. The "Dolphin
Rodeo" or "Dolphin Dance" is a sight to behold.
It is possible to catch 60 or more fish in less than an hour.
Mahi Mahi are excellent table fare, so bring a cooler if you
want to take some back to your freezer at home.

| Bottom
fishing provides steady action year-round and can be done simultaneously
with live baiting. The usual suspects caught on the bottom rod
include various grouper and snapper species, jacks, cobia, African
pompano, sharks, stingrays, eels and many more. Most of these
species grow upwards of 50 pounds and are true brawlers.
Reef fishing is
a great alternative to offshore fishing, especially for a family
with younger children, as the action is constant and the fish
smaller. This is done by deploying the anchor in waters from
15 to 60 feet. Large amounts of chum (ground-up baitfish) are
dispersed into the water to attract dozens of different reef
species to the boat. Once a chum slick is well established we
free line cut bait back to waiting fish. Bottom and surface
rods are also deployed to hook larger predators attracted to
the boat.
Other local players
we target include yellow tail, wahoo, kingfish, tuna, permit,
swordfish and the occasional marlin.
